-Welcome-
A 101 On Ya Mas Lingo
If you’ve ever traveled, you know that every region has its own language. Whether you remain within the States and travel to a new part of the country or fly overseas, there is always a new dialect to learn. As one of the most unique Pelham restaurants, our team at Ya Mas Taverna & Bar thought a little 101 in the Greek language would be a fun way to start off this blog page! For the sake of simplicity, we’re providing you with a spelling replicating sound. You’ll find the actual Greek work in parenthesis.
Yah-Soo (Γειά σου)
Ya sou is an informal way of saying hello. However, if you are very comfortable with the person you are addressing, you can step down another notch to ‘yah.’ However, if you’re looking for a slightly more formal way of saying hello or addressing a group of people, go with ‘ya sas.’
Yah-soo (Γειά σου)
No, you are not seeing things. Like many other languages, hello and goodbye in Greece are the same. Much like the Italian word ‘ciao’ or the Hawaiian ‘aloha.’ Same rules apply.
If you’re looking for the slang version of ‘see you later,’ ta-leh-meh (τα λέμε) is your answer.
Ha-ree-ka Po-lee (Χάρηκα πολύ)
If there is one thing for sure, Greek people are friendly! So, knowing how to say ‘nice to meet you’ is a must.
Ya Mas (Στην υγειά σας)
And, onto one of our favorites (clearly). Whether to good health, family, or celebrating a night away, cheers! When it comes to yamas, there is only one rule – you must smile when you say it!
While on the subject, ahs-pro-pah-toh (Ασπρο πάτο) translates to ‘bottoms up’!
Ef-kha-ri-stoe (Ευχαριστώ)
If you ever have the pleasure of traveling to Greece, this phrase is one you’ll hear often. However, it is also a phrase that comes with several variations. Simply stated, efharisto means ‘thank you.’ If you’re looking for how to respond, ‘parakalo’ is the Greek word for ‘you’re welcome.’
And, there you have it. A few of the most common words and phrases in the Greek language brought to you by one of the most unique Pelham restaurants – Ya Mas Taverna & Bar.
