Every Day is a Good Day for Xinomavro

Xinomavro. Some say it is one of the finest wines produced in Greece. Winner of the 2020 World Decanter Wine Awards, the wine is without question excellent. And, while it may be used to make sparkling wine and roses, Xinomavro is best known as a red wine. With this prestigious reputation in mind, there are not many Pelham restaurants that will offer such a fine offering. Good thing you found Ya Mas!

Here, we delve into the world of Xinomavro.

The Grape

As the primary red grape of the Naousa region, Xinomavro is cultivated in many areas. In 2010, nearly 5,000 acres located solely in Greece were the sole producer of the grape. However, growing in popularity, a mere three years later, the acreage increased to over 5,500 acres with planting worldwide.

Regardless of the expansion within growing regions, Xinomavro remains one of the most important and celebrated grapes in Greece. So much so that in 1971, the PDO was established to mandate the use of 100% Xinomavro grapes. The quality is often compared to one of the finest grapes found in Italian wines.

The Flavor

While some wines are bottled and distributed immediately for consumption, Xinomavro is aged for a minimum of two years. The notable acidity and tannins provide ample opportunity for wine consumers to cellar their favorite bottles. However for others, the wine reaches perfection when released and is enjoyed over a freshly cooked meal.

Food Pairings and Xinomavro

As with any wine selection, not all food pairings are meant to complement each other. In general, red wines are known for matching well with red meats, dense cheeses, and red pasta dishes. When it comes to Xinomavro, the selections are similar. However, as a Greek wine, it wouldn’t be a truly authentic experience without a wine that perfectly complements lamb. Below are a few other dishes to consider pairing with Xinomavro.

  • Artisan Cheese Board
  • Grilled Wagyu Rib Eye
  • Braised Lamb Shank
  • Hera’s Mushroom Garden
